The word terrier is derived from the Latin word ‘terra’ which means earth. The terrier breed is very interesting brand of dogs who are basically very active and don’t have any fear though they are generally very small in size and lean. Generally there are few many varieties of terrier dogs.
Usefulness of terrier breeds
Ireland and Great Britain are the two major developing countries of the Terrier breeds. The basic roles of the dogs are that they can be in command of foxes or rabbits or rats. They can operate equally well on these creatures both under as well as above the earth. Apart from that the large dogs can hound badgers. Some types of Terrier reputedly Airedale and the Kerry Blue Terrier are efficient to track down the otters present in profound waters and river rats. In early days the dogs were used in many sports. Present days can see that these species of dogs are great for giving company and they are most beloved pet of any family. They are dedicated and trustworthy. But sometimes you must treat them rigidly. A number of varieties of terrier dogs have inherited traits of digging out earth.
Types of terriers
Earlier just two varieties of terriers were recognized. One had long legs and the other one with short legs. The different parts of the world bred the terriers suiting their personal needs. While some wanted the terriers for pest control others wanted them for their hunting capabilities. Here we can mention the names of the different varieties of terriers found in different parts of the world. The cross of terriers was done among fighting dogs, hunting dogs as well as other types of terriers. But gradually the various dog shows have felt the rising need of some breeds those are generated from the earlier versions which now have lead to generation of terrier dogs those are mainly kept as pets in homes.
